Adolescents as “producers of their own development”: Correlates and consequences of the importance and attainment of developmental tasks

2010

In a four-wave longitudinal study, 228 adolescents from seven age cohorts were investigated annually regarding the importance and subjective attainment of age-specific developmental tasks. Distal outcomes (educational trajectory and residential independence) were examined when the adolescents were 21 years old. The results of latent growth models (LGM) showed that there was no mean level change in the importance of developmental tasks, whereas perceived attainment of developmental tasks increased over time. In general, whereas the importance of developmental tasks was more impacted by family factors, the attainment of tasks was more influenced by individual factors. Adolescents with more pa…

Marital conflict, parental support, and school adjustment in adolescents

2006

Educational and family-related determinants of organized sports participation patterns from adolescence to emerging adulthood : A four-year follow-up…

2022

This study aimed to identify organized sports participation patterns and their prevalence from adolescence to emerging adulthood, and the educational and family-related determinants of the patterns. Adolescents in the Finnish Health Promoting Sports Club (FHPSC) study answered a health behaviour questionnaire and reported on sports club participation at ages 15 and 19 (N = 609). In emerging adulthood, dropouts (total 41.05%; females 43.72%; males 36.56%), maintainers (30.87; 26.44; 38.33), nonparticipants (27.59; 29.32; 24.67), and joiners (0.49; 0.52; 0.44) (p =.024) were identified. A mixed multinomial logistic regression analysis showed, that male gender, as compared to female gender, in…

Autonomy and Connectedness among Italian Emerging Adults: Their Relations with Psychological Well-Being

2012

Emerging adulthood is a distinct period demographically, subjectively, and in terms of identity explorations characterized by profound role changes across multiple life domains (Arnett, 2001). According to many authors (Aquilino, 2006; Fingerman, 2000), autonomy and relatedness both must be fulfilled for psychological growth and well-being not only during adolescence, but may be even more necessary as an adolescent makes the transition into emerging adulthood and then into adulthood. In this perspective, the autonomous-relational self is suggested to be a healthy synthesis of autonomy and relatedness (Kagitcibasi, 1996, 2007). Given that issues of autonomy and connectedness appear to be maj…

Career goal-related success expectations across two educational transitions: A seven-year longitudinal study

2013

The purpose of this seven-year longitudinal study was to examine the trajectories of adolescents' career goal-related success expectations during two educational transitions. Altogether 850 (48% female, M Age = 16) participants reported their success expectations for their career-related goals, first in the last year of comprehensive school and four times during the following seven years. Overall, the success expectations showed a significant increase. However, there was considerable heterogeneity in the development of these expectations. Growth Mixture Modeling showed that four trajectories fitted the data best: high-increasing (78%), low-increasing (9%), decreasing (6%) and U-shaped (7%).…

The role of maternal support of competence, autonomy and relatedness in children's interests and mastery orientation

2013

Abstract The present study investigated the extent to which mothers' support for their children's sense of competence, autonomy and relatedness predicts their children's interest in math and reading, and also their mastery orientation, during the transition to primary school. One hundred fifty-two children were examined twice during their first grade year regarding their interests and mastery orientation (Time 1 and Time 2). Mothers filled in a diary and questionnaire measuring maternal support, also on two occasions (Time 1 and Time 2). Children's school performance in reading and math was tested at the beginning of the first grade (Time 1). The results showed that, after controlling for t…

UNA RIFLESSIONE PEDAGOGICA SULLE COMPETENZE EDUCATIVE GENITORIALI TRA AFFETTIVITÀ ED ETICA

2020

The paper deals with notion of parental competence by exploring its pedagogical and educational meanings. In the light of the contemporary “cult of emotion”, not only emotional but also ethical aspects are highlighted. An inquiry into the educational need for recognition is developed, thus a reflection on the “maternal” and “paternal”, not in terms of opposing functions but in terms of educational responsibility and reciprocity. Thanks to this analysis, co-parenting and coresponsibility will emerge as key categories of contemporary family pedagogy, also in the perspective of a wider educational community.
